Every year for Christmas I typically am gifted a word-of-the-day calendar that has a lot of interesting content. Of course, by the time I rip off each day’s word, I have already forgotten the previous day’s word and definition, but that is beside the point. Every once in a while I find a word that I really like, and I save it for future reference.
This morning I stumbled upon the word prothalamion, which I might add, is a mouthful just to sound out.
pro-tha-la-mi-on (n) : a song in celebration of a marriage.
Stemming from the 1596 poem written by Edmund Spenser entitled Prothalamion, today this word is reserved for the most special of circumstances and is used by only a small portion of the population.
So the next time you are celebrating the marriage of your son, daughter, friend or relative, you can impress the guests with your knowledge of classic wedding celebration words.
Do you know of any awesome words or phrases to describe a wedding ceremony or celebration?
