Can Virtual Wedding Invitations Beat Letterpress Printing?

Shortly after the iPad came out, there were videos circulating all over the internet with people doing very strange and innovative things with their new toys. One of my favorite videos was of a couple whose officiant used an iPad to remember his notes and direct the ceremony.

“I now pronounce you man and wife. At this time, George is going to update his Twitter and Facebook Status…”

While this is a funny clip and a creative idea, what this video asks us to consider is whether or not technology should fully replace traditional forms communication. What most specifically interests me is the question of whether or not virtual wedding invitations will ever replace hand crafted paper wedding invitations.

I think not.

The artisan style and palpable quality of letterpress wedding invitations is par excellence, and the deep impressions that they make upon your guests cannot be mimicked by any other method. In the world of social networking, streaming videos and instant email messages, a physical wedding invitation still goes a long way to say that you care.

While the word Google creeps into our vocabulary (and homepages) on a daily basis, we sometimes forget that there are alternative search engines available. In the past year Bing, a new Microsoft entity, has been creating quite a stir on the internet.

Advertised as a “decision engine,” this new type of search engine supposedly gives better results and more accurately organizes websites when you search.

I decided it was time to test the theory,  so I entered in my favorite search, “letterpress wedding invitations,” just to see what popped up. Needless to say, some of the results were the same as Google and Yahoo, but I was surprised by a few of their inclusions.

Obviously I was a little shocked by our blog being on the top of the search, along with our website which was the second result. Maybe this ‘decision engine’ business reads my mind, knows what I want to see and dishes out the search results accordingly. I had to ask a coworker to run the same search on their computer, just to make sure there was no psychic trickery going on…needless to say, the results were the same on both computers.

Not that the rankings on a search engine truly dictate quality, customer service or a magnificent printed product. I understand there lots of choices when it comes to printers. So I suggest you look around, see what is out there. Contact a couple printers, ask about any specials they might have and their general prices, request a sample or two from your favorites and choose accordingly.
