I was surfing around the letterpress wedding invitation blog-o-sphere recently when I stumbled upon a really fantastic wedding website.  The Disney Wedding Blog catalogues different styles of Disney-themed wedding ceremonies and celebrations from around the world. With everything from Disney wedding invitations to Disney-themed wedding favors, this website has it all.

What this Disney Wedding Blog made me think about is how easy it is to incorporate your favorite theme, colors, styles or designs into your letterpress wedding invitations. Printing solids with any printing method always raises special issues that must be addressed. In letterpress printing there are some unique ones.

One of the most notable issues is the ink coverage. The solid area may appear somewhat mottled since the Crane’s Lettra paper we use is unsized, making the paper softer to take a better impression. When paper is sized, as most papers are today, it will receive ink more evenly, since the sizing acts like a coating on the paper.

So this lack of sizing means that ink will not usually lay down quite as evenly as paper manufactured with sizing. We work hard to keep things as smooth and even as possible, often resulting in a superb job like this:

In this extreme close-up photograph you can see how ink lays down on the paper. There is always some irregularness, but is usually ‘averaged out’ by your eye.

Lighter inks can be even more challenging due to the fact that lighter inks have less pigment, so getting overall even coverage is more difficult.

I love colors. I try to surround myself in a variety of contrasting and complementing colors. At home, at work and even with the clothes I wear, I am enthralled by unique and spirited colors. Colors with names like floral white or Alice blue make me laugh and I even have this design book where you can flip through different home scenes and move different color swatches back and fourth to see what it could look like with a different combination. Suffice to say, I think the more color the better.

In the world of letterpress printing, color combinations are limitless. This bride and groom decided to go with two different color schemes for their invitation set.

The original looked good, but there was so much potential. By adding a second color this piece moved from a delightful presentation to a beautiful and welcoming invitation set.

This version contrasts the blue of the palm tree and names with the rest of the text. It is a well rounded design that can only be achieved with two colors.

Likewise it is possible to print your RSVP card in the contrasting color of the invitation. By altering these small details you can easily expand your realm of possibilities.

Adding color is an easy way to spice up your invitation set. Think about complimentary and contrasting ideas. Also how and where you include the second colors makes a big difference, find whatever works for you.

Utilizing the inside flap of the envelope, this letterpress invitation design carries the extra color idea to a new arena. Combining rich,  italian paper with the invitation set, this extra style will amaze your wedding guests.

Our Kira invitation set utilizes a second layer of red paper to contrast with the ink color and accent the whole presentation. The second layer elegantly frames the invitation and adds a passionate glow to your wedding theme. This is a great way to introduce a second color to your invitation set for a very minimal cost.

A retro South Beach invitation set, this design adds a pleasant second color by using a pocket folder. This design is enhanced by the use of a lovely silver folder to bind all invitation pieces together. Available in different colors and for different designs, a pocket folder makes an excellent addition to any invitation set.

Alternately, you can always choose to use an envelope in a different color. This Dogwood design utilizes a chocolate brown envelope lined with pale pink that ties the invitation set together nicely. With this added color, the invitation can stay the same, but the overall presentation is enriched.

Adding extra color to your letterpress wedding invitation is easy and fun. It generates an extra special feel that you cannot achieve by any other process.
