I’ve been with my fiancé for nearly seven years. Childhood sweethearts! We made a move to Canada 3 years ago and all is wonderful. We both knew someday we’d end up married but I’m not one of those girls who just had to get engaged and married as soon as I could. We took a vacation this year to San Francisco and Las Vegas. When we got to Las vegas he had a Helicopter Tour of the Grand Canyon planned. We had been to Las Vegas about 5 years ago on a backpacking trip around the world, but when we were there we didn’t have the money to splash out and go see the Grand Canyon. I always regretted this so I assumed that’s why he had planned this as a surprise for me.

So it was both our first time on a helicopter and it was amazing! We both loved it! As we flew over the canyon we then landed on the floor of the canyon for a champagne lunch. I cannot describe it. It was so surreal the whole thing. While the pilots were preparing the lunch we were down and the edge taking pictures and that and when I turned around he was down on his knee. Me being the romantic I am, thought he was being sick from the Helicopter ride or something :). And then out came the ring I couldn’t believe it.. I don’t think I actually even said yes, it’s such a blur!! But I have the ring so I must have said yes!! I didn’t see much more of the canyon on the helicopter trip back.. all I could do was stare at the ring! Definitely a trip I will never forget. I didn’t think he could be so romantic but wow it certainly was!!

The month we got engaged was a flurry of fun wedding related things, as my best friend was marrying the man she always knew she’d marry. The wedding turned out beautifully and the couple was so happy, and we were so happy for them…but after they left for their honeymoon, I was just crushed that wedding ‘stuff’ was over. Not that there wasn’t anything to do- we had some pretty major life changes going on as well. My (now) fiancée, David, had accepted a job in Norfolk, VA, so we headed up there to find a place for him to live. We’d really only been up there for a 24 hour trip to check the place out, but armed with travel guides and Google research, we were determined to find him a place to live. After a day of checking out the area, things weren’t looking good, so we headed out to the beach to relax. The beach wasn’t quite what we were expecting, with the noise and throngs of people, so we decided the bay ‘beach’ was a better choice. I didn’t think about it at the time, but it was odd that David wanted to walk on the beach…that’s something I like to do but he prefers sitting or playing in the water…in fact, it’s probably the only time he’s ever agreed to walk on the beach. Either way, while we were walking along, talking about the recent changes in our lives, what was going to come and our plans for the future, he stopped, and told me he’d ‘gotten me a treat.’ He pulled out a champagne bottle shaped Limoges box, which was cute, but then he opened it and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Totally shocked, I sat down in the sand and asked him if he was serious. After an immediate yes and several minutes of shocked silence, we began to celebrate. He had wanted to make sure we could look for a place for US to live, a house we could call ours. The first people to congratulate us was a group of older eastern European women, who were decked out in full swimming attire, bathcaps and all. The entire group of families ran up to us and crowded around, congratulating us (in English and some other language) and oohing and ahhing over the ring. And knowing I’d want to track my friend down on her honeymoon to tell her the news, David had already told her before they left. Good thing he didn’t change his mind! The next day, we found somewhere to live in ‘our’ town.

I don't know how 'engaging' the story is, but we're thrilled! (and engaged!)

I proposed to Andrea on Sunday, 19 April 2009 on a secluded inlet of Tomales Bay. Kayaking has a special meaning to us as one of our first dates was kayaking on Morro Bay. I told Andrea we were kayaking to celebrate "the end of her night classes in Sustainable Design." We set off a little before noon and explored the bay. As noon approached, we decided to head toward a cove to have lunch. After enjoying our lunch, I presented a card with a picture of a crane and an enclosed poem I had written titled, "The Dream." After reading it, Andrea looked up and saw me on one knee. I proposed and we are still not sure if Andrea gave an audible, "Yes," because she was too excited to speak. Soon thereafter, a crane flew into the inlet and waded through the water...a very good omen symbolizing longevity and loyalty.

James made our engagement moment the best ever. He had planned a special date and wouldn't tell me anything about it. He does this often so I had no clue it was going to be as special as it was. We drove up PCH to Malibu and he found a desolate spot on the beach and out of the trunk came a complete picnic he had packed. We had steak and cured meats, wine, and cheeses all while we layed on the blanket and listened to the waves crashing and the iPod playlist he had made. When it began to get dark, I excused myself for a moment and when I came back, he had layed out candles in the sand with dessert ready. It was so sweet, I was in awe of his romantic side. Then he said that he had made me something and asked me to close my eyes. He placed something plastic in my hand and when I opened my eyes, he was on one knee. The plastic was a flashlight so I could see the ring. It was so amazing. I don't think he even had a chance to ask me to marry him before I started screaming "yes"!! After we layed in the sand crying and holding each other, we packed up and left. I thought we were going home, but instead we pulled up to the Shangri-La hotel in Santa Monica. I thought maybe we were meeting friends for drinks to celebrate, but when the valet asked how he could help us, James responded "We'll be checking in". I was again surprised. He had reserved a suite with a view overlooking the Pacific Ocean and champagne waiting on ice. It was indeed the best night of my life. I love you James!!

My true romantic man ALWAYS plans great surprises. He is very good at getting gifts, and planning wonderful fun filled evenings, so, the night of our one-year dating anniversary, I expected just that, a regular-old fun filled evening with the man I hoped someday in the distant future I would marry. I had asked him a few weeks prior if we were doing something to celebrate, and he said "Maybe I wanted you to think I forgot." That was enough for me, I knew he'd remembered, and I knew we'd have a great night.

He picked me up, looking dashing, as usual, and swept me off to our regular old fun filled local dinner spot, Baracoa. He was acting normal, so, I had no idea what was coming.

After dinner, we get in the car and start driving. Music is a huge part of our lives, so I figured we might be going to a show, but it was a Monday night, and NOTHING was happening. I'd googled all of the local music venues. The Greek was dark, the Hollywood Bowl was dark, Pantageous dark. Nothing worthwhile was happening at the tiny local places either. Spaceland had nothing good, not even the troubador had anything going on. So, we're driving along, and all of a sudden I see the EL Rey marquis. FRIENDLY FIRES was playing! OMG! I knew that was my big surprise for our anniversary! We were planning on going the previous December, and were really looking forward to it, but he got mugged that day at gunpoint! (Thank God nothing serious happened that day!)

I was sooooo excited to see Friendly Fires! We parked the car, and he'd been filming our night, as he does regularly. He said, "just stand there, while I get a shot of the sign and you." So I stood; he got down on one knee, and he fiddled with the camera. I still had no idea what was going on.

I said, "c'mon already! Let's go inside!" I was really looking forward to seeing the show.

He begins to recite a practiced propsal. "So, I think this is a perfect way to culminate a perfect year. I'd like to know if you'd like to make it permanent."

Huh?!?!

He pulled out a blue ring pop. "I got you the biggest sapphire I could find. Will you marry me?"

I said, "Is this for real?" He'd proposed, and I STILL didn't get it!

He said, "Yes, I want you to be my wife. Then he produced a real engagement ring."

I squealed, and cried, and jumped around, give him the biggest sloppiest kiss ever, and evenually said "YES!"

It was probably the happiest moment as far as I can remember...my then boyfriend wanted to camp so we took off a few days from work and drove to Padre Island, Texas. We camped out at a beach. I woke up to the ocean waves, birds were singing in the background. I looked over and he was still asleep (that was what I thought at the time). I decided to take a morning walk along the beach. The morning air at the beach was utterly refreshing. There was no one around and time seemed to stand still as I look over the horizon where the sun was rising, just above the horizon. I thought to myself of how fortunate it is to have a life like this - peaceful, calm, serene, waking up in the morning by my beloved.

As my thoughts drifted away to the sky above, I heard my boyfriend calling out :" Hey sweetie....what cha doing?" He then caught up with me shortly after. He asked if I slept ok and how I was doing. I said: "The sleep was great. It feels awesome to be out by the ocean. How's about you? Did you sleep ok? Did I wake you up?" He quietly responded: "Nah...but hey sweetie, I wrote you a poem last night..." He quickly drew out a note from his pocket and started reading. I was amazed because he has never wrote a poem before to me.

I nearly cried listening to the poem, then he cried when he softly uttered: "Will you marry me?" and kneeled down right besides me....All I did for the first few minutes was crying, and hugging my boyfriend then so tightly like I couldn't let go of him...I then softly whispered "of course sweetie, of course I would like to marry you!"

Joel and I had been talking about engagement for several months. As we were wrapping up our pre-marital counseling in April, he began to ask me questions about what I liked in a ring. Fundamentally, I wanted to be surprised by the ring but we went shopping one time for me to at least show him what styles I liked (or not). In early June, we were at dinner when he shared that he was trying to decide between two rings. I so enjoyed hearing how he was really into choosing just the 'right' style and quality of the ring.

By mid-July I was getting antsy because not a word about engagement had happened since that night at dinner. I was thinking, "ok, I'm going to be patient..." We had a visit to Tennessee and my birthday coming up so I didn't want to rush things if he was planning around one of those events. Then circumstances came up one Sunday that made me feel the big question was going to be delayed indefinitely.... and I was having a melt-down. In reality, Joel had already spoke with my parents over a week before and was putting the final pieces together for asking me to be his wife. In reality, that next day, Monday, was to be the day I would say, "yes!"

Joel invited me to come over for dinner that evening. It seemed to be just a normal night for us. After dinner, I asked what the plans were for the rest of the evening. He suggested that we have some quiet time together first, then he needed to take 20 minutes to get a project finished, and then we could go for a walk. (Going for walks have always been a great connecting time for us since early in our dating.) I thought it was a great idea. We had really good prayer time together, then he went off to do his project. However, he has never went to his room and shut the door to work on something. At one point, he came out to the kitchen and I couldn't quite decide if he was acting strange or not. I was incredibly curious (and suspicious of a proposal), but my emotions were still a bit raw from the previous evening and decided to not set myself for disappointment.

Finally, we went on the walk... and I did wonder if he was going to ask out under the moonlight... but that ended up being the quickest walk, both in route and pace, that we have ever had. I figured that it was getting late and maybe he was just tired and wasn't up for a long walk. When we got back to the house, I began getting my things together and he said to me, "I got you another book. Do you have time?" I said, "of course!"

(Let me preface the rest of this story: We enjoy reading books together, and Joel even does a great job adding some voices. Just the week before he had surprised me with the children's board book, "Guess How Much I Love You.")

The rest of the story....

I turned toward him and saw this heart-shaped pop-up book titled, "Love Bugs". We cuddled up on the sofa and Joel began to read to me. It turns out that the 20 minute project he finished earlier in the evening was pasting his own notes to me on each page. As we went through the pages, I was suddenly feeling confused because something clued me into the reality of what was happening. Now remember, I didn't think a proposal was actually going to happen any time soon so my head and emotions were having hard time catching up. He turned to the last page which had a spread of a dozen pop-up 'love-bug' roses. I saw the ring attached to the top rose and quickly looked away because (LOL) I was wasn't sure that I was suppose to see it... like somehow he didn't realize that he had left it there. (LOLOL It's hilarious now, but at the time I was just shocked.) Finally, he folded down the last hand-written note that said, "Will you marry me?" I quickly said, "yes!" He then got up, knelt before me, and put the ring on my finger. About ten minutes later when the shock and confusion wore off, I cried. The wonderful realization that I was marrying my prince had settled in.

I so enjoyed hearing how he was really into choosing just the ‘right’ style and quality of the ring.

By mid-July I was getting antsy because not a word about engagement had happened since that night at dinner. I was thinking, “ok, I’m going to be patient…” We had a visit to Tennessee and my birthday coming up so I didn’t want to rush things if he was planning around one of those events.
Dave is a pathologist and I'm a transcriptionist and oddly enough we met at work. We kept it a secret from our coworkers for the first few months and finally decided to let everyone know by showing up at a work party together. Dave somehow manages to have many hobbies, one of them being the lead guitarist for his band Sultry Simone and The Deadbeats. I spent many nights going out to the bars and watching them play. They are awesome!! So when I heard they were playing another show it didn't phase me. Everyone from work was there and all of our friends. Dave's parents just happened to be staying the weekend and decided to come (with some of their friends and some of their friends' friends!). I had no idea and apparently I was suppose to be sitting with his parents when he proposed but I managed to mingle, grab a drink, and was even in the bathroom when they played their "que song". :) When the time came, Dave got nervous because I was no where to be found, so he chatted up the crowd with his charm and finally I emerged from the bathroom. I was forced in my seat with some friends when he started to say "I write some of these songs we play and I really can't sing at all and somehow Whitney-Cole (the singer) always makes it sound like this amazing thing.. but tonight I'm going to sing for you guys right now.." and he sings this song he wrote for me about how we met, when he first said i love you, and at the end he asks "will you marry me?" Of course I was in shock and cried the whole time (and when the camera pans over you can see me with my hand over my mouth) and at the end I jump up and hug him. The funny part was when he got down on his knee I got down on mine too because I wanted to hug him so bad and say yes! Apparently he hadn't officially asked me yet and I was a little early! :) You can see him sing the song @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtPvt1IFquY or go to you tube and type in 'dave8325'
